corbu lives in cambridge!

This fence is in someone's backyard. It looks awesome, but due to that law against trespassing, I only braved as far as the end of the driveway to get the picture. It looks like Le Corbusier's modular man (red and blue on the left) meets someone else's man (green and black on right). Fight!

rain day

Today it is raining so I hitched a ride to work. Its also my friend Lauren's birthday. Here's a shot of one of her best sides...

Happy Birthday Lauren!

Look! Our very own Stonehenge, right here in Riverside! So many unanswered questions- who built this? What kind of technology did they use? What does it all mean?

fake is the new real

They seriously love their fake flowers in this neighborhood! Note that the planter on the left hosts fake daffodils
and a fake rose, not to mention the decorative plastic angel and the wood picture of Mr. and Mrs. Baby Chick- just hatched, yet already married. And of course, no planter is complete without the random stick poking out.

now nobody knows your name

I always liked the idea of The Friendly Eating Place, even though I never actually ate there. It just sounds so welcoming! It had a fire awhile back and although I thought Mass Ave would be a good restaurant location, it didn't come back. I recently ran into Diz, my good friend and Vice-President of Two Hat Design Build coming out of the space. He gave me the lowdown that the owner contracted them to fix the space up, but there's no new tenant yet, which got me thinking: what do we need on Mass Ave? My call is a sushi place. Or a bakery. Any thoughts?

problems solved

Saw this on someone's 2nd story porch- its a display basket for books that says: The Ortho Problem Solver, America's Definitive Reference Book.
What's funny about this is the Ortho Book the display is for is an outdoor gardening book. The location of this house is completely concrete for the entire block, there's no place for gardening anywhere around here. I know, maybe its for their summer home on the cape where they have a huge outdoor garden, and they have a lot of solved problems there. But probably not.

Its a nice juxtaposition, though. Like the book
is the garden. Or something.

one glove

Its like its waving as the world goes by. When you find a lone glove on the sidewalk its understood that the thing to do is to stick it on a nearby fence. That way the glove owner can back track and hopefully find it with ease. On my daily work walk, I see a lot of articles of clothing on the sidewalk; socks, underwear, t shirts. I think its because they fall out of laundry baskets on people's way to the laundromat. Funny how the only thing that ever gets put on the fence, however, are the gloves. Its like its universally accepted: socks stay on the sidewalk, gloves go on the fence.

have cart, will travel

One of the local homeless people left this cart parked here while scouting around the 'hood for something. I just finished reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy- the story revolves around a father and son that have lost their home and are heading south with all their possessions in a shopping cart. It got me thinking what a useful thing shopping carts are.
On a different note, a pedestrian in Central Square was hit and killed by a tractor-trailer yesterday morning. Its a sobering story by any account and because I go through Central at least once a day, it really got to me. I don't know the details, who's at fault, how it happened, etc. But to all my fellow walkers, please, you're never too old to look both ways before you cross the street.

doric, ionic, or corinthian?

I love this guy's yard. Its like all the magic of a junky antique store in the comfort and privacy of your own home! I could stand there and look over his fence for hours at all the acquisitions; the composition of this real life collage is amazing. Just goes to show you- there's a fine line between pack rat and accomplished artist.
(By the way, I think its a composite.)

cambridge, city of nerds

I had too much baggage to take any pictures today (don't ask), but here's one from Wednesday. See that orange and blue "9" banner on the light post? Its a chromosome. There are 23 of them between Harvard and Kendall squares, it was part of some Cambridge science fair last year, and they never took them down.
Now you know.

go go gadget action figure car

Sorry peeps, I didn't walk to work today and I won't be walking in tomorrow either. But hopefully these pictures will hold you over until walking resumes on Friday. I saw this car at lunch yesterday- its covered with hundreds, probably thousands, of tiny plastic action figures. The close up doesn't do it justice, but its really amazing. It looks like one of those gum ball machines that holds little toys threw up on this car.

mixed seasons

Featured in this showcase garden is a half ski pole fence support and a single fake tulip. There is also a stick of bamboo being used as a fence support as well, and a seashell for decoration. The fence that required all this elaborate support is one of these cheap-o plastic things that's 12" high and (I thought) you just stick into the ground. Now at what point do you say to yourself: This plastic decorative fencing is just not staying up! Rather then removing it and re-sticking it into the ground, I will saw a ski pole in half, and rig up this support system. That will look nice!
I mean the whole point of the fence is decorative, right? To create a picturesque enclosure for your seashell and fake tulip. So doesn't the ski pole take away from the decorative aspect? If you have to jerry-rig your decorations, are they still decorative? I mean... never mind, I don't think logic is going to work on this one.

still life on sidewalk

In order from left to right: jar of organic peanut butter, plastic soap dish, plastic ice cube tray (2, stacked), an "equalizer" ("to increase room comfort year around"), a bag of whole foods brand pita chips, a "first alert" motion sensor switch, another bag of pita chips, and a miscellaneous electric device that could possibly be another equalizer (which would be nice for symmetry's sake.)
I'm not really wondering why these particular items are here as much as I am wondering what the hell is an "equalizer"?! Is it different than a fan or a heater? And who wrote the subtitle to increase room comfort year around? It sounds like a bad translation if I've ever heard one. I suspect that this product was purchased either from SkyMall or a late night infomercial. Probably the latter.

look at me, i'm crazy tilted windows house

Noticed this house tucked behind and between two street front houses. The front door is open, so I had to take my picture and escape quickly for fear of being caught. I wonder what the resale value is on something that ... um... unique?
This inexplicably makes me angry. I imagine the homeowner to be an annoying yuppie-hippie (yippie) that thinks they're "crazy" and "creative", but in a "fun" way. They probably wear lots of bright colors and belong to that purple hat club for old ladies, which also makes me inexplicably angry. This is too much upset for a Friday. I should probably just start drinking now.

stuff nightmares are made of

This is one of the scariest looking trees I've ever seen. I'm no advocate of senseless tree removal, but I would be all for putting this thing out of its misery. If you double click the picture you can see that its covered with tumor like bumps and the only branches left are at the very top. Hard to tell if it gets any leaves, but even with spring green all over it, I think that this tree could star in any horror flick.

are tiny camels cute or scary?

Check out this tiny camel scene someone had carefully glued to the flower pot on their porch. Those tiny camels really are tiny- the height of a quarter. Maybe the person who lives here is one of these people that get really into making tiny miniature things. Or maybe they just had way too many camel decorations left over from an Arabian Nights party they hosted. I don't think I'll ever know.

holy crap, its warm out!

Its crazy amounts of warm out right now, and I really wasn't expecting to be hit with such tropical breezes when I left my house this morning! Spring has to be on the way, so here's a spring green house to help greet the season. Unless this family has a 3 year old decorator, there is no excuse for the offensive use of primary colors here.
