happy easter?

This house always has very festive decorations- you may remember them from the valentine's day flag. I think they've jumped the gun a bit on this one, but then again spring can never come soon enough in my mind. so here it is, in the form of a giant inflatable bunny with a carrot tattoo on its foot, sitting on an egg. in the snow.

car fire

I spent the past few days in Houston, Texas, so I haven't been walking to work. Besides, no one walks anywhere in Houston. The hotel offered to call me a cab to go to the CVS a block away! But on my cab ride from the airport to the hotel, I did see this very exciting car fire. It started as a small puff of smoke and I watched as the thing was totally engulfed with flames in seconds. A local told me that car fires happen all the time there, and they call them carbeques. That's Texas for you, I guess! I'm glad to be back in the east coast, where the coffee is strong and no one calls me ma'am.

there she goes..

Every now and then I need to remind myself why I walk instead of taking the bus, which picks up by my coffee shop and drops off by my office. Ideal, right? This is why: I waited 10 minutes at the bus stop and started walking. Three buses in a row went by in the opposite direction, and then, 200 feet from my office door, two buses in a row went by in my direction. They're supposed to run every 10 minutes; I have a friend that calls the MBTA reliably unreliable. So basically, I am destined to spend a minimum of 20 minutes outside every morning. I can spend it shivering at the bus stop waiting, or I can spend it getting some exercise by walking to work.

cambridge protests

Some industrious homeowner has taken the time to craft this darling little war protest/ memorial. Its been up for about 5 years now. In case you can't tell from the picture, those are supposed to be little coffins, hand painted with the American flag, and the sign says "no happy holidays without them". Seeing as its on a residential street in a not often traveled neighborhood, I suspect the only people that have seen it are me and the guy's neighbor. GW take note! Someone in Riverside has some wood scraps and a paintbrush, and they're not afraid to use them!

holy bright orange house, batman!

On mornings that I don't have time for coffee before I leave for work, I just look at this house for 30 seconds. It pretty much has the same effect on me as a shot of espresso.

this happen here

Two plaques on my office building. I've seen each a million times before, but it was only today that I began to wonder if they might have anything to do with each other. Could the housekeeping movement have anything to do with the rise of the reversible collar?! What is a reversible collar, anyway?

happy valentine's day

flags?
This romantic holiday has apparently inspired a very special kind of house decoration- flags! I saw not one, but two valentines day flags on my walk. What's that warm sensation I'm feeling? It must be the nylon heart decorated love radiating from the Riverside 'hood.

anywhere but here

This is actually a picture I took yesterday of a nice looking coffee shop I always pass on my way to work. Its only recently the coffee shop, it used to be an Italian take out diner. Someday I will have the motivation (or insomnia) to get up early enough to stop in for a relaxing cup of coffee before work. Today is not that day. Instead today it is super crappy out: slushy, rainy, misty, and grey. And I got splashed by a car going too fast on a residential street, so now my pants are wet and I'm in a crappy mood. But it is warmer!

a new holiday

Its phone book delivery day. Phone books are piled up in front of every building like some kind of massive vaccination effort. Or maybe its more like holiday decorations- red and green for Christmas, red, white, and blue for Independence Day, and yellow for Phone Book Delivery Day!

I can't even remember the last time I used a phone book, which is weird because they used to be a crucial accessory to basic communication. I wonder how long before they stop giving these things out?

Helloooo
internet, nice to meet you!

progress

With all the crafts, seniors, and pedestrian woes, you may have begun to wonder if I didn't live in an overgrown 'burb rather then the metro area the People's Republic claims to be. I know I was. But here's the proof- political art plastered to buildings.
I like progress, I like Obama, and I like urban art. Print by Shepard Fairey.

crafty patriots

I noticed this patriotic soda bottle decoration on a house this morning. Looks like someone has been having arts and crafts time. Probably one of those seniors I've been so cautious about lately.

Something we all need to watch out for! The sign looks old, but I just noticed it today. There's several posted around the block- not sure if the sign is for us or for them.

is that nessesary?

Its raining and totally crappy out but I still walk to work becuase its quicker then waiting for the bus. Its also garbage day. This pedestrian hating homeowner has decided the best way to get revenge on the already miserable walkers is to block the ENTIRE FREAKING SIDEWALK with their soaking wet garbage. The sign post- garbage- parked car trifecta forced me to decide: leap the garbage pile in a single bound or backtrack into the street through a huge puddle and around the car. I leapt. Not the smartest thing I've ever done, really.

baby, its cold outside

I spent the past 4 days in lovely and warm Florida. On my walk to work I reflected on the weather and I realized- it is possible to live a life without winter coats! I know its an obvious statement, but the reality of it didn't really kick in until I exchanged my 30 degree morning walk for 75 degrees for 4 February days. If I were to move to Florida, however, it seems I'd also have to exchange my ankle length down coat for a matching turquoise track suit with sequins and embroidered flamingos. Now that is something to think about.
